Negombo
Arrival — Negombo
Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport and settle into Negombo, a laid-back fishing town close to the airport — the easiest possible first night on the island.

Negombo — Mirissa
Drive south, breaking the journey at Galle Fort to wander its old colonial streets, boutiques and ramparts, before continuing on to the beach town of Mirissa for the next three nights.

Mirissa — whale watching
An early-morning boat heads out from Mirissa bay in search of blue and sperm whales — one of the best-value wildlife encounters anywhere on the island. The rest of the day is free by the sea.

A full day with nothing on the agenda but the beach: fresh seafood, warm sand and the Indian Ocean stretching out in front of you.

Mirissa — Kirinda
Drive further along the coast, with optional stops at the Hambantota salt flats or Matara's own small fort. In the evening, visit Kataragama Temple, one of the island's most important multi-faith pilgrimage sites.

An early jeep safari through Yala National Park in search of leopards, elephants and crocodiles — the best sightings tend to cluster near the park's waterholes at first light.

Head into the hills, stopping at Buduruwagala to see its enormous rock-carved Buddha figures. Closer to Ella, visit Ravana Cave and Ravana Falls before checking in for the night.

Ella — Lipton's Seat
A tuk-tuk safari up to Lipton's Seat, the viewpoint where the Scottish tea pioneer once surveyed his estates. Visit a working tea factory, then finish at Adisham, a colonial-era monastery with tidy orchard gardens.

Ella — Nuwara Eliya
Take the scenic train from Ella to Nanu Oya — one of the most celebrated rail journeys in Asia, threading directly through the tea estates. Continue by road to Nuwara Eliya for the night.

Nuwara Eliya & Horton Plains
Explore Nuwara Eliya's colonial-era town centre and Victoria Park on foot. For early risers, an optional pre-dawn visit to Horton Plains National Park adds a gentle 3-4 hour highland hike with a chance of spotting sambar deer.

A scenic drive through the hills, with stops at waterfalls including Ramboda Falls. In Kandy, take a walk around the Upper Lake Drive and Market Square before visiting the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.

A closer look at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in the morning, followed by an afternoon at the Royal Botanic Gardens of Peradeniya — 150 riverside acres of royal palm avenues and orchid collections.

Drive towards the cultural triangle, stopping at a spice garden in Matale for a short cooking demonstration, and at the ancient Hindu temple of Nalanda Gedige.

Spend the morning at Polonnaruwa, the island's medieval capital, including the Gal Vihara rock-carved Buddhas. In the afternoon, a private jeep safari at Minneriya National Park, home to one of Asia's largest wild elephant gatherings.

Sigiriya — Negombo
An early climb up Sigiriya Rock Fortress to beat both the heat and the queues, followed by the Dambulla Cave Temple. Drive back towards the coast for your final night.
